Everybody knows that the most beneficial foods we can consume are whole grains, lean meats along with healthy fats. These would be the foods that give us all protein along with energy. They keep our bodies healthy nutritionally but don't stuff us full of empty calories which will later have to be burned off at the gym. Did you realize though that a few of the diet foods you've been eating may have been hindering your ability to lose weight? They could even be trying to keep you from slimming down altogether! Here are some of the foods that you could be having which are hurting your efforts to lose weight.

You are not really aided by Sports Drinks. You have most likely been told that a sports drink is the fastest way to replenish your body's electrolyte levels after a workout. Many health professionals agree, however, that if your workout is fewer than ninety minutes, water is a fine way to do this. Sports drinks are full of sugar and calories and a lot of other things you don't need such as artificial flavors and colors which defeat any attempts at eating only natural products. Try sipping some chocolate milk as a substitute. The sugar in chocolate will help your muscles begin to repair themselves and the calcium in the milk will strengthen your bones.

Skip that protein shakes. Lots of people think that protein shakes may be used in place of meals and to curb cravings between meals. The truth is that for anyone who is already eating a balanced diet all the protein shake does is overload your system with protein. Contrary to popular thinking, protein doesn't get saved as muscle, it gets stored as fat. If you've already had your daily allotment of protein that day, your whole body will just save the extra in your fat cells for later and that won't enable you to drop pounds or inches.



Pre-packaged deli meat is not as healthy for you as you may think. You might imagine that a sandwich made of whole wheat bread and pre-packaged lean deli meat makes for a good lunch. Actually, pre-packaged deli meat has much too many preservatives plus sodium (one portion contains about a third of the amount of sodium you should eat in a day). This can be specifically harmful if you are at risk for heart disease. Instead of purchasing the pre-packaged products, you need to instead use home cooked poultry or freshly sliced meat from your grocery store's deli counter. Sure these are generally the more expensive options but they are rather a lot healthier for you.

There are all kinds of things that we assume will help us lose weight: eating a whole wheat bagel in the morning, for example is actually a lot worse for you than a bowl of oatmeal with some cinnamon sprinkled into it for flavor. Ask your doctor which foods are best for you and then have those. If you are cautious about precisely what you take in and treat your body well, losing weight should not be that big of an issue for you!
